Benjamin Galdames close to Atlético San Luis
The Mexican player spent his early years in Chile but could end up playing in his homeland for the first time as Atlético San Luis close in.
One of the emerging players who has made a difference with Mexico is Benjamín Galdames. The 22-year-old started out as a youth team player in Chile as he has ancestry from that country although he himself was born in Mexico City. Despite his Chilean connections, the midfielder has always represented the Tricolor - both at Under-20, Under-21 level and has been called at senior level.
With the start of the 2023 Apertura just days away, Galdames looks set to quit Chile and return to his homeland to play in the Liga MX for the first time in his career, with Atlético San Luis. In Chile, Unión Española coach Ronald Fuentes has confirmed that the player will be joining the rojiblancos for the new campaign.
The coach explained: “I have spoken with Benjamin during the past few days. He arrived back home on Wednesday. We spoke with the club and there is an option for him to leave in this transfer market. He will be out of contract at the end of the year and has notified the club that he is not going to renew. There is the possibility that he can go to Mexico - a number of clubs have shown an interest. I think that economic terms have already been agreed - it’s a matter of days, hours or days before he joins a Mexican club.
“Joining Atlético San Luis will be a great step for him, because it is a club with strong links to Atlético Madrid and maybe that could be another alternative for him in the future. He has already chosen to play for Mexico rather than Chile, so surely if he goes there, it will increase his chances of being called up,” he added.
Galdames was called up by Mexico this summer - he participated in the Maurice Revello tournament where he put in some excellent performances and ended in the tournament’s Ideal XI. The 22-year-old will soon have to report for duty in San Luis for the final days of the preseason.
