The Copa América is beginning to take shape. While Brazil is expected to announce their squad for the competition on Friday, in Uruguay, Marcelo Bielsa is busy drawing up his squad for the tournament. According to DSports Uruguay, the coach has included Luis Suárez in his provisional list for the competition which will take place in the United States from 20 June to 14 July.

Who is on Bielsa’s preliminary list for the Copa América?

Bielsa called up 35 players. With a minimum of 35 and a maximum of 55, he opted for the minimum. Luis Suárez is included,” journalist Rodrigo Romano revealed. The Inter Miami striker was excluded by Bielsa in his last list for friendly games against the Basque Country and the Ivory Coast in March. Suárez’s last call-up with the two-time world champions was at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, more than a year ago. Since then, he hasn’t featured under interim coach Marcelo Broli or current coach Marcelo Bielsa, who took office last summer.

New faces in Uruguay’s Copa América squad

Suárez’s inclusion comes at a time of crisis and revolution in Uruguay. After a disastrous World Cup, the Celeste began a process of rejuvenating the squad under the guidance of Bielsa, mixing talent from the U-20 world champions Luciano Rodríguez, Anderson Duarte and Sebastian Boselli with already established stars such as Ronald Araújo and Fede Valverde. The appearance of amateur striker Walter Domínguez stands out on the list - the latest ‘crazy move’ from ‘Loco’ Bielsa

If he finally manages to make it onto the list of 23 players, Luis Suárez will be able to bid Uruguay goodbye in style. The forward, who is on his way to turning 38, is entering the final stretch of a hugely successful and prolific career, which included lifting the 2011 Copa América.

Suárez’s return to Uruguay provides a favorable scenario for hope. The ‘Pistolero’ has shone in his first months in the MLS with Inter Miami, where he already has 12 goals and seven assists across all competitions, currently being the team’s second top scorer after Leo Messi. ‘Lucho’ is one of the untouchables for ‘Tata’ Martino, who has only left him out of the side when he has been in need of a rest.
