Boca Juniors and Racing to contest Argentine Super Cup in Abu Dhabi

The Argentinean Super Cup will be played outside the country for the first time when the ninth edition of the tournament takes place next month. Abu Dhabi will stage the final between Boca Juniors face Racing Club on Friday 20 January 2023, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed today.

The AFA and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) signed a four-year strategic partnership deal in back in June. That deal includes staging a series of friendly games between both countries plus other arrangements, such as Argentina’s national team using Abu Dhabi as their training camp base in the run-up to the recent World Cup. Lionel Scaloni’s team warmed up for the tournament with a friendly against the United Arab Emirates at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.

Great exposure and visibility to the Super Cup

As AFA president Claudio Tapia explained when the partnership was announced, “Within the expansion strategy of our football, being able to transfer the Argentine Super Cup to a destination like Abu Dhabi is very meaningful. This agreement will give greater exposure and global visibility to our competition and create new commercial opportunities for the clubs and for our association. We welcome the Sports Council of Abu Dhabi as a new commercial partner of AFA. We share the passion for football and we will work together to leave a strong legacy footprint in the Abu Dhabi territory”.

Confirmation that the IX edition of the Argentinean Super Cup will be played in Abu Dhabi, at the 25,000-seater Hazza bin Zayed Stadium, came in a press release from the AFA, which read: “After the first successful experience of Argentina’s last friendly match with the United Arab Emirates National Team just before the start of the World Cup, the ADSC and the AFA continued their plans to strengthen football and sporting ties with the organisation of the Argentine Super Cup Final 2022 agreed for Friday 20 January 2023″.

Boca Juniors, who one Super Cup final title in their honours (2018), were crowned Primera División champions in October. This will be their fourth Super Cup appearance. Meanwhile Racing Club, who finished just two points behind Boca in the league, go their revenge by beating Los Xeneizes to lift the Trofeo de Campeones in November. Racing have only starred in one Super Cup final - in 2011/12 when they were just pipped to the trophy by none other than Boca.
