Boca Juniors rocked by death of iconic head coach Miguel Ángel Russo
Argentine football mourns the Copa Libertadores-winning coach, who was in charge of Boca at the recent FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S.

Miguel Ángel Russo, the 69-year-old head coach of Boca Juniors, has died after weeks of serious illness that had forced him to step away from the sidelines intermittently.
Born on April 9, 1956, in Lanús, Argentina, Russo had returned repeatedly to coaching Boca despite ongoing health struggles. Earlier this week, his condition worsened, and on Tuesday, the club issued a brief statement: “Miguel Ángel Russo is receiving home medical care with a guarded prognosis, under continuous supervision by his medical team and the club’s medical staff.”

Boca Juniors confirms death of iconic coach
In its most recent social media announcement, Boca confirmed Russo’s passing, marking a deeply sorrowful moment for the club, which had been showing signs of resurgence on the field. “Club Atlético Boca Juniors announces with profound sadness the death of Miguel Ángel Russo. Miguel leaves an indelible mark on our institution and will always be remembered for his joy, warmth, and dedication. We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Farewell, dear Miguel.”
Russo’s long battle with health challenges
Russo’s medical struggles date back to 2017, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Although he initially overcame the disease, he suffered a relapse in recent months. His final hospitalization occurred on October 3. Despite repeated hospital stays, Russo remained determined to continue as Boca’s coach, returning to the team even after periods of inpatient care.
A career defined by passion and achievement
Argentine football now mourns one of its most respected coaches. Russo’s most celebrated achievement came in 2007, when he led Boca Juniors to a Copa Libertadores title. His last major media appearance with the club came during the FIFA Club World Cup, where he guided Boca to a spirited performance against Benfica and Bayern Munich before a disappointing loss to Auckland City.
As a player, Russo spent his career with Estudiantes. As a coach, his career spanned decades across Argentina, with stints in Spain with Salamanca, in Colombia, where he won a championship with Millonarios, Peru, and even Saudi Arabia.
Tributes pour in for Boca Juniors coach
Following Russo’s death, tributes have come from across the football world. The Argentina national team, training in Miami, observed a moment of silence in his memory. River Plate also issued a statement mourning his passing. Boca Juniors announced that its upcoming match against Barracas, originally scheduled for Saturday, will be rescheduled.
