Borré: “I’ve played against Real Madrid, you can compete with them”

The Colombian highlighted the virtues of his rival in the European Super Cup and referred to the learning that the defeat against Bayern left behind.

Rafael Santos Borré wants to lift his second trophy in Europe. After an historic season, in which Eintracht Frankfurt won the Europa League with the Colombian at the fore, the German club will face Real Madrid in the European Super Cup in Helsinki on Wednesday.

In Tuesday’s press conference, the striker highlighted the virtues of the Champions League winners and recalled his time in Spain with Villarreal. He spent the 2016/17 season with the Yellow Submarine and faced Real Madrid twice in LaLiga, drawing 1-1 at the Bernabéu and losing the home fixture 2-3.

“I had the opportunity to play in LaLiga, and faced Real Madrid twice,” the Colombian said. “They are a team with high-quality players, but you can compete with them. The two games with Villarreal were very close, the team We were able to stand up to them and take the ball from them, but Madrid are very dangerous when they break forward. For us as a team, we will need to be solid and focused to reduce their chances to attack us. We will also need to take advantage of the chances we get and the moments when we are on top during the game to win”.

Regarding the good atmosphere in the Eintracht squad, Borré added: “We’re enjoying this moment and what we did last year, what the team achieved as a group. Winning a trophy has given us confidence which we can build on. Tomorrow we have the great privilege of playing another final, it’s an opportunity to continue making history and to win things. You have to live these moments in the best way”.

The season did not start well for Oliver Glasner’s team. While it began with an encouraging 0-4 DFB Pokal victory over Magdeburg, their opening Bundesliga game ended in a 1-6 defeat at home to Bayern Munich - a game which Borré thinks the team must learn from in the Super Cup.

“The game against Bayern served us as an experience. If we are not solid and compact, if we do not win the individual duels, we can have a bad time. It helped us to make sure that we are more prepared for this game. The good thing is that the Bundesliga is long and we will have time to make amends. This is a final, a single game. It is essential to learn from what happened to us against Bayern,” he concluded.
