Brandon Vázquez lights up Liga MX with Monterrey
USMNT striker Brandon Vázquez scored a double in leading Rayados to a 3-1 victory over Atlético San Luis on matchday 3 with his goals helping Monterrey top the table..
Rayados de Monterrey said goodbye to their top scorer during the transfer market as Rogelio Funes Mori packed his bags and swapped Monterrey for Pumas after bagging 160 goals for the side from Nuevo Leon.
To fill the vacancy left by the Argentine, the Liga MX side signed Brandon Vazquez from MLS side FC Cincinnati with the striker hitting the ground running as his goals have helped Rayados top the 2024 Clausura table after three games.
Vázquez scored a double in the win over San Luis helping his side to a 3-1 and thus bagged his third goal of the season silencing the many sceptics who were not convinced that the forward would adapt to the Mexican league following the move from MLS.
“Brandon has adapted very well and even though he did not carry out preseason with us, the reality is that he did a great job with the physical trainers and has adapted well on the field,” acknowledged Rayados boss Fernando Ortiz.
Copa América on the horizon
‘Superman’ as Vazquez is fondly known due to his resemblance to Clark Kent, has already endeared himself to the Monterrey faithful and the 25-year-old will be keen to maintain this momentum in Mexico as the Copa América looms large with the tournament set to be staged in the United States next June.
Vazquez is the most in-form US striker currently and has been a regular call up by Gregg Berhalter and in recent times has bagged more goals than the likes of Jordan Siebatcheu and Ricardo Pepi.
The California native who decided to postpone a move to Europe to try his luck in the unpredictable world of domestic Mexican soccer has found his groove at the Nuevo Leon club and despite it being early days in the Clausura, Monterrey under Ortiz look like a formidable side already this season.
