Brazil confirmed starting lineup for game 2 of the group stage vs Switzerland

Brazil cemented their status as one of the favourites to win the Qatar 2022 World Cup thanks to a 2-0 victory over Serbia in their opening game and another win against Switzerland on Monday (11am ET) will put them in the driving seat to clinch a place in the round of 16. Three points from the clash at Stadium 974 would be enough should Cameroon and Serbia play out a draw in the other Group G clash earlier in the day.

Although the likes of England, France and Spain posted bigger wins on matchday one, some analysts viewed Brazil’s performance against the Serbs as the most impressive of the tournament considering the opposition they were facing. Tite’s side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first 45 minutes of the clash but struggled to create many chances, being denied by Serbia goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić on the occasions they were able to make space for efforts on goal.

However, Brazil stepped things up a gear in the second period and, thanks to some tactical tweaks, were able to open their opponents up with greater frequency. After Alex Sandro had hit the post with a superb strike from distance, Richarlison netted twice, with his acrobatic second goal catching the eye in particular.

Neymar injured and will miss at least the next two World Cup games

Of course, by far and away the downside of the victory was the injury picked up by talismanic attacker Neymar. The Paris Saint-Germain star was forced off the field with 10 minutes left to play after being on the receiving end of a heavy challenge by Nikola Melenković. The Brazil team doctor has since revealed that Neymar will miss the next two group stage matches at the very least due to ankle ligament damage, with right-back Danilo, who also started against Serbia, suffering the exact same fate.

Neymar took to Instagram to reflect on his misfortune: “Nothing in my life came easy and I’ve always had to work for my dreams and goals. I have never wished anyone anything bad and always helped who needed. I’m injured, yes, it’s not nice, it will hurt but I’m sure I will have the chance to come back because I’ll do everything possible to help my country, my team-mates and myself.”

With that in mind, Tite will be forced to make at least two changes to his side to take on the Swiss. The former Corinthians boss has plenty of options available to him to replace Neymar, with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, who has trained in the attacking midfield role since Brazil have been in Qatar, perhaps the most likely option, unless there is a change of system.

Veteran defender Dani Alves could be drafted in to replace Danilo at right-back, although centre-back Eder Militão is also an option to play there.
