Faced with repeated incidents of racism in the world of soccer, Brazil is now pushing to implement a nationwide measure known as the 'Vinicius Law’. The proposal aims to combat racist abuse in every stadium across the country, especially when directed at players.

The bill has already been introduced in Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies. However, following the recent incident involving Vinícius Júnior of Real Madrid and Benfica’s Gianluca Prestiani during a UEFA Champions League match, the political party Socialism and Liberty Party is urging lawmakers to fast-track the process.

Proposal includes suspending matches over racist abuse

The proposed law would introduce several measures aimed at addressing racism in stadiums. Among the most notable is the power for referees to suspend a game if any report or evidence of racist abuse emerges during a match.

Lawmakers are also seeking to implement training programs for sports professionals, educational campaigns, and a unified protocol to identify and punish those responsible for racist attacks.

No one should have to go through situations like Vini is facing. A campaign against racism can’t just be about marketing.

Congressman Chico Alencar

The initiative was originally introduced by Congressman Chico Alencar. Recently, fellow lawmaker Sâmia Bomfim, a member of the same party, called for the legislation to move forward more quickly so it can take effect as soon as possible.

In public remarks, Bomfim said the issue must be addressed firmly, stating that racism is a crime and must be fought effectively. Alencar added that no player should have to endure the situations faced by Vinícius and many others on a near-daily basis. He also warned that campaigns declaring “enough racism” cannot remain mere marketing slogans.

Similar measures already tested in parts of Brazil

Brazil has already seen similar initiatives at the regional level. States such as Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul have introduced their own protocols to address racist incidents in stadiums.

In addition, the Brazilian Football Confederation has approved internal rules allowing clubs to be penalized with point deductions if they are involved in acts of racism.

The events during the match between Real Madrid and SL Benfica, which involved Vinícius and Prestiani at Lisbon’s Estádio da Luz, have now become the catalyst for Brazil’s political leaders to push for nationwide action aimed at eliminating similar incidents from the sport.
