Brighton send holders Liverpool crashing out of FA Cup
Brighton knock FA Cup holders Liverpool out to advance to the fifth round of the competition.
Brighton advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, beating holders Liverpool 2-1 at the Amex Stadium.
Liverpool took the lead when Mohamed Salah played in Harvey Elliott, who finished past Jason Steele to make it 1-0 to the away side.
Nine minutes later Brighton captain Lewis Dunk flicked a Tariq Lamptey shot past Alisson and into the net to level the sides before the break.
Kaoru Mitoma would eventually pop up as the match-winner, scoring a sensational individual goal in the 92nd minute, when he showed superb skill to take the ball down, cut back inside and volley the ball high into the net.
“It’s nice to have him in our side. He’s a top player and we’re lucky to have him on our team,” Dunk told ITV when asked about Mitoma after the victory.
Brighton beat Liverpool again
Brighton have now beaten Liverpool twice in three weekends, after recording a 3-0 win over Jurgen Klopp’s side earlier this month in the Premier League.
The Seagulls have never won a major trophy and despite losing many of their top players in recent times, and their manager Graham Potter, they continue to impress and improve under Roberto De Zerbi.
Brighton fans are enjoying the best period in the club’s history as De Zerbi’s side goes from strength to strength and 2022-23 could be the season they lift silverware for the first time and even make it into Europe.
Liverpool are out of the cup and will soon be turning their attention to Europe, when they take on Real Madrid in the Champions League in February and March.
