The only certainty that Busi did offer was he will not play in the United States next season. That basically means that Busquets has two options left open to him: either renew his contract and continue with Barça or accept an offer to play in Saudi Arabia. Curiously, those are the same two options which Leo Messi is considering. The Argentinean, who told PSG yesterday that he will be moving on this summer, has a dizzying offer from the Saudi government, who control the Pro League. Messi was appointed tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia last year with a view of boosting the oil-rich country’s bid to host the 2030 World Cup.

It makes for an intriguing set of scenarios - which contradict each other. Some see Busquets and Alba leaving Barça and joining up with Messi in Saudi Arabia. Others think that the three of them will be reunited at Barça.

That was a dream scenario that Busquets imagined over a year ago, when he exclaimed, “I would love to give the captain’s armband to Leo”. In the next few the situation will be a lot clearer, and that could also give us some clues about where Messi will be playing next season….
