Can Club América break goal record in Liga MX Apertura-Clausura era?

When América visit Tigres on the final weekend of the Apertura 2023 regular season, they will have the chance to go down in club history.

Club América have the chance to set a new goalscoring record when they face Tigres on matchday 17 of the Apertura 2023 regular season.

América head into the final round of league-phase games with 37 goals to their name in the Apertura so far - one short of their club-record tally in a short-tournament regular season.

Las Águilas scored 38 regular-season goals in the Clausura 2005 - a championship they went on to win - and the Apertura 2022.

Liga MX goal records less likely to fall

However, although they could well write their name into their own history books, América are unlikely to establish a new Liga MX-wide scoring record for a short-tournament regular season.

The highest ever goals total since the Liga MX introduced the Apertura-Clausura format in 1996 was achieved by Toluca, who racked up 55 in the Apertura 2002 - at a time when the regular season was 19 games long.

Since the league phase was cut to 17 games, the top-scoring team is Pachuca’s Clausura 2009 side, who netted 42 times.

Points record within América’s grasp

While Pachuca’s mark appears just out of reach, América are well placed to break the points record for a 17-game regular season this weekend.

The 13-time Mexican champions have 39 points as things stand, so a win over Tigres would take them past the 41 points accrued by Club León and Cruz Azul in the Clausura 2019 and Clausura 2021 tournaments, respectively.

América themselves hold the points record for short tournaments of any length, having picked up 43 points in the Apertura 2002.

Tigres vs América: when, where, how to watch?

TV viewers in the United States will be able to watch the game on TUDN USA and Univisión.
