Refereeing bodies have told Premier League officials to pause play so players can break their fast during the holy period of Ramadan.

Officials have been issued guidance to allow players to break their fast once the sun has set - and this will affect a number of players taking part in evening matches.

The break will provide a chance for those involved to take on liquids, gels or supplements during a pause in play in fixtures over the coming month.

When is Ramadan?

Ramadan begins on Wednesday 22 March and lasts a month. Referees have been asked to be aware of players who are fasting before kick-off and to agree on an estimated time for the pause in play during the 90 minutes.

Premier League players involved

Premier League stars Mohamed Salah, N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez are among the players who will abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours over the next four weeks.
