Canadian striker surpasses Mbappé in the top scorer list
Jonathan David became the first player from Lille OSC to score a hat-trick in a Ligue 1 game since Nicolas Pépé.
Jonathan David is having a breakout season in Ligue 1 in his third year with Lille OSC and he is en route to become the golden boot winner. The 23-year-old scored a hat-trick in LOSC 3-3 draw against Olympique Lyonnais on Friday night to secure a much needed point for his team at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The Canadian international reached a milestone because he became the first Lille player to score three or more goals in a Ligue 1 game since Nicolas Pépé did it against Amiens on 15 September 2018. Jonathan David has scored 19 goals and provided four assists in 26 league appearances for Lille so far.
Fight for the French golden boot
With the hat-trick against Lyon, David has now surpassed Paris Saint-Germain ace Kylian Mbappé in the Ligue 1 top-scoring list; the 23-year-old striker has one more goal than the one-time World Cup winner. Mbappé will try to regain the top spot on Saturday when PSG go on the road to play Brest.
Jonathan David has scored 53 goals for Lille OSC since joining the Ligue 1 side in 2020 and with the hat-trick scored on Friday night, he also became Lille’s top scorer in the 21st century. The Canadian international is under contract with LOSC until the summer of 2025.
