Carlos Vela returns to LAFC as co-owner
The former striker returns to LAFC as a co-owner of the team after the departure of Joe Tsai, who sold 6% of his shareholding in the club.

Nearly a year after announcing his retirement from LAFC, Carlos Vela is officially back with the Black & Gold — but now in a completely new role. The Mexican star has joined the club’s ownership group, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter off the field.
According to reporting from Sportico, Vela is one of three new investors joining LAFC’s ownership group following the exit of two previous stakeholders, including Joe Tsai — who also owns the Brooklyn Nets — and Mike Mahan, CEO of Fanatics.
The new investors collectively purchased a 6% stake valued at roughly $1.25 billion, per Sportico. Alongside Vela, the incoming partners include a Korean‑American investor and a prominent Mexican entrepreneur.
This transaction ranks among the largest ownership‑stake sales in MLS history, underscoring LAFC’s soaring valuation and continued growth. While the club has not publicly confirmed the details, sources told Sportico that the agreement is finalized.
The billionaire owner of the Brooklyn Nets is selling his stake in the Los Angeles-based MLS club, while a local legend and two others are coming in.

Vela joins a star‑studded ownership group
By stepping into the front office, Vela now joins an already high‑profile roster of LAFC co‑owners. The group includes actor Will Ferrell, NBA legend Magic Johnson, U.S. soccer icon Mia Hamm, and his former LAFC teammate Giorgio Chiellini, who now reunites with Vela in the boardroom instead of the locker room.
