Celtic 0-3 Real Madrid: Los Blancos plant the flag in Glasgow

In his daily opinion piece, AS honorary president Alfredo Relaño offers his thoughts on Real Madrid's win at Celtic Park.

The whistle sounds in Glasgow and in the end ot was comfortable for Real Madrid. 

Vini Jr, Modric and Hazard with the goals as the reigning champions showed their quality.

Celtic can point to a dominant first half and now need to dust themselves down for the next test.

The Benzema injury the only cloud for the Spanish side.

Rodrygo goes close to making it 0-4. We'll have just 2 minutes of time added on.

Celtic playing with more heart than head at the moment and how much the fans would love a consolitionm goal to send them hole with a spring in their step.

Final five minutes and Madrid have looked different class with the second goal killing off Celtic's dreams and taking the air out of the lungs of the bulk of the crowd.

Decent effort from Jota as the Lisbon player fires over the bar. That's his last action as he is replaced by Haksabanovic.

It's been widely claimed that Real Madrid lack depth when it comes to striking options. We'll have to wait and see the exact nature of the Benzema injury but Madrid really lack players of same calibre to step in. 

Still a very open contest with both sides enjoying spells of possession. Celtic still the side enjoying the better chances but the visitors dominating in terms of retaining the ball.

The ball falls to Maeda and the Japanese international just fails to get any contact with the ball. Decent move from the home side once again.

It's been a pulsating half in Glasgow with the best chance of the evening falling to McGregor after he rocketed the ball off the Real Madrid woodwork. 

The evening from a Madrid perspective will be tainted by the Benzema injury with the striker heading straight to the dressing room.

The whistle sounds and it's 0-0 at the break.

Last minute of the half... Both sides will be reasonably happy with how the game has gone. One minute of time to be added.

Great chance for Vini Jr as he latches on to a fine assist from Hazard. Decent stop from Hart as he smothered the ball well. Best chance of the night for the visitors.

Jota breaks down the Celtic left but the delivery is poor and easy for Courtois to gather. 

Into the final five minutes of the game and it's been highly entertaining with Madrid dominating possession and Celtic carving out the better chances.

Fede Valverde is the main danger man for Real Madrid on the right flank. It's been a discrete performance so far from Vini Jr. on the other wing.

Nice patient build up from Real Madrid now but ultimately no end product with 'Los Blancos' set to miss the target provided by Benzema.

Madrid dominating the game in terms of possession

Looks like the French forward will indeed be subbed as Rodrygo appears to be warming up.

The French striker is now stretching alone and may go to ground to seek medical attention.

Worrying for Madrid as Benzema has just pulled up and seems to have tweaked a hamstring....

Can Celtic maintain this high tempo for 90 minutes? That is the big question as the home side have enjoyed the better chances in the opening 26 minutes.

Shots on target: Celtic 2-0 Real Madrid....

Celtic hit the post...McGregor with a fine effort as Courtois was totally beaten.

The tempo of the game drops a notch and it's been pretty even-steven after approximately 20 minutes. 

Nothing really for either keeper to do having said that with a couple of half chances.

Hatate strikes and forces a fine save from Courtois. Great strike from the Japan international

Hatate is looking sharp tonight as the ball goes through to Giakoumakis, the Greek offers a meek appeal for a spot kick but the referee waves the play on.

Abada with the best chance of the night as the striker is one on one with Courtois...poor from the Israeli as he fires straight at the Belgian.

Benzema and Modric both shoot and just for a moment, Celtic are on the ropes as the visitors dominate. 

Celtic's passing has gotten sloppy now with the Glasgow side struggling to retain possession.

Real Madrid seem to have ridden that early wave of intense pressure as the side in black now dominate the ball with Celtic now pressed deep.

Madrid with a dangerous free ..Kroos to take from an acute angle....The German finds Valverde but the move breaks down and the ball is back all the way to Courtois.

All the early pressure coming from the side in green and white with the crowd playing their role in spurring the side on.

There won't be an empty seat in the house tonight with 60,000 fans expected to cram into Celtic Park. The local rendition of the iconic: "You'll Never Walk Alone" is very special too.

Glasgow, setting for Madrid's 9th European Cup

Real Madrid won their ninth European Cup in neighbouring Hampden Park back in 2002 with this iconic strike from Zidane good enough to beat Bayer Leverkusen.

The other teams in Group F are also in action tonight with RB Leipzig hosting Shakhtar Donetsk.

Madrid not alone in Glasgow tonight

There will be a healthy showing of Real Madrid fans at Parkhead tonight with many local based fans being joined from the couple of hundred who have made the trip over from the Spanish capital.

Most observers felt Luka Modric would be given a breather tonight with games coming thick and fast but the Croatian starts in the centre of the park alongside Tchouaméni and Fede Valverde.

Both Celtic and Real Madrid have enjoyed excellent starts to their respective seasons and both clubs are some of few sides across the continent to boast a 100% opening to the 22-23 campaign. Celtic have recorded six wins from six with the last victory coming on Saturday as they put four past city rivals Rangers in the ‘Old Firm’ derby. Ange Postecoglou’s side have only shipped one goal in the league all season currently boasting a goal difference of +24.
