Update:

Twenty-year-old midfielder Luka Romero is currently in his second Liga MX tournament with Cruz Azul, and he’s beginning to show signs of consistency and rhythm in Mexican soccer’s top flight. Born in Durango, Mexico, Romero launched his professional career abroad, but it’s in Liga MX where he’s finally finding regular playing time.

What are Romero’s Cruz Azul stats?

In the Apertura 2025, Romero has featured in nine of Cruz Azul’s 10 matches, scoring twice. He’s started six games and logged 510 minutes out of a possible 900. The campaign hasn’t been without setbacks - he’s picked up a red card - but overall, his presence on the pitch has been steady.

During the previous Liga MX tournament, Romero played in 14 matches, scored two goals, and accumulated 665 minutes, starting in eight of those games. Now, the attacking-minded midfielder - who was part of the Cruz Azul squad that won the CONCACAF Champions Cup - is finally enjoying the kind of regularity that eluded him during his time in Europe.

Failed to shine in Europe

Romero’s European stint didn’t unfold as hoped. At Spain’s Alavés, he made just six appearances without scoring. With Almería, he found the net three times in 13 matches. His time in Italy was also mixed: no goals in four outings with AC Milan, one goal in four matches for Lazio, and a single strike in seven appearances for Real Mallorca back in Spain.

Internationally, Romero chose to represent Argentina over Mexico and Spain. Yet ironically, it’s in Mexican soccer where he’s gaining the consistency and visibility needed to attract attention at higher levels. Thanks to Cruz Azul, he’s already lifted an international trophy, after Los Cementeros (’The Cement Makers’) thrashed Vancouver Whitecaps 5-0 in June’s Champions Cup final.
