Chelsea bombshell: Why Enzo Maresca left and who could replace him
Maresca and Chelsea have parted ways after rising tensions at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have identified a potential replacement.

The start of 2026 has brought immediate turbulence to Chelsea, and to manager Enzo Maresca. The former Premier League champions and the Italian coach have parted ways following mounting tensions with the club’s hierarchy.
Critical hours at Stamford Bridge
According to English media, discussions between Chelsea executives and Maresca had accelerated as frustrations on both sides reached a boiling point.
Those concerns intensified after Maresca failed to appear at the postmatch news conference following Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Dec. 30. Initial reports suggested illness, but that explanation was quickly dismissed.

Well-connected reporter Ben Jacobs clarified that Maresca was not sick. Instead, he was using the moment to reflect on his future and whether his position at the London club remained tenable.
Maresca unhappy with Chelsea hierarchy
Maresca had privately expressed dissatisfaction for some time, pointing to internal limitations that affected his autonomy. Strategic decisions, he felt, were not always aligned with his vision, leading to growing frustration behind the scenes.
That unease surfaced publicly in recent comments in which the Italian described experiencing his “worst 48 hours” in his time at the club, a remark that raised eyebrows across English soccer.
Chelsea’s potential Maresca successor
The Guardian had reported that the relationship between Maresca and Chelsea’s leadership had completely broken down, prompting the club to explore replacement options as a matter of urgency.
“One solution would be for them to turn to the Strasbourg manager, Liam Rosenior, who has long been viewed as a potential successor to Maresca,” the newspaper reported.
Premier League predicament
Chelsea currently sit fifth in the Premier League standings, 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal. They remain firmly in the fight for Champions League qualification alongside Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City.
The timing could hardly be more delicate. Chelsea are set to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Jan. 4, a high-stakes fixture that could arrive the Blues in limbo following Maresca’s departure.
