Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández scored his first goal for Chivas Guadalajara in 14 years on Saturday, as Fernando Gago’s men beat Puebla 3-2 to boost their prospects of direct qualification for the Clausura 2024 playoffs.

Collecting Roberto Alvarado’s 34th-minute pass, Hernández controlled in the area before directing a precise angled finish past goalkeeper Jesús Rodríguez. The goal opened the scoring at Estadio Akron, where Chivas added two more shortly after the break, courtesy of Érick Gutiérrez and Alvarado.

Puebla then threatened to stage a sensational comeback from 3-0 down, when Diego de Buen and Alberto Herrera netted in the final minutes; however, Guadalajara held on for their second straight Liga MX victory.

When did Hernández last score for Chivas?

Hernández, who rejoined Chivas in a free transfer in January, had not scored for his boyhood club since 27 March 2010.

In his final Chivas appearance before joining Premier League giants Manchester United, the striker was on target in a 6-2 league thrashing of Santos Laguna. The game also saw Hernández supply no fewer than four assists.

In all, ‘Chicharito’ has scored 30 goals in 86 games for Chivas; 29 in 79 between 2006 and 2010, and one in seven since his return earlier this year.
