Chivas’ Argentinian connection set to bear fruit once more
Chivas Guadalajara is on the brink of qualifying directly for the Liga MX playoffs for the first time in a year and a half.

Despite a rocky start to the 2025 Apertura, Gabriel Milito’s Chivas squad has found its rhythm and is now within striking distance of a direct berth to the Liga MX playoffs. Coincidence or not, once again it’s an Argentinian manager leading the charge.
When did Chivas last earn automatic Liga MX playoffs qualification?
The last time El Rebaño Sagrado secured direct qualification to the postseason was during the Clausura 2024, under the leadership of Fernando Gago. On that occasion, Los Rojiblancos also finished sixth in the overall standings.
In the quarterfinals, Chivas knocked out Toluca, but their run came to an end in the semifinals at the hands of Club América, courtesy of a lone goal by Israel Reyes.
Now, Chivas is once again on the verge of clinching the sixth spot - and as things stand, they wouldn’t yet have a confirmed opponent in the next round.

It’s worth noting that Chivas is up against history. Since the playoff format was introduced in Mexican soccer, no team finishing sixth has ever gone on to win the league title.
