Chivas Guadalajara will be out to take another big step towards a top-four regular season finish when they host Cruz Azul tonight in matchday 16 of the Clausura 2023.

With two games remaining Chivas can reach their highest point total since 2004 if they win their last two Clausura matches. However Cruz Azul will be desperate to turn around a poor run of form that has seen them win just once in the last four games.

It’s a game that viewers in the US can watch live on the streaming platform fuboTV, which offers a free trial.

Chivas vs Cruz Azul: preview

Chivas

Chivas head into the clash with Cruz Azul sitting fourth in the regular season standings, and with direct qualification for the playoffs proper within reach.

Veljko Paunovic’s men lifted themselves into the top four with a 2-0 victory over Club León on matchday 15, Pável Pérez and Rubén González scoring the goals as Los Rojiblancos leapfrogged their opponents in the table.

Chivas, who are 12-time champions, are seeking their first Mexican title win since the Clausura 2017 tournament and only their second this century.

Cruz Azul

Beaten 3-1 by Club América in matchday 15′s Clásico Capitolino, Cruz Azul no longer have any chance of claiming an automatic place in the Clausura 2023 playoffs proper.

The nine-time title winners, who replaced head coach Raúl Gutiérrez with Ricardo Ferretti in February, will have to go through the postseason’s preliminary round if they’re to reach the quarter-finals.

With five points separating Cruz Azul and Santos Laguna in 13th, La Máquina are very close to making sure of their prelim berth. The club has won just one Liga MX championship since 1997 - the Guardianes 2021.
