Chivas sporting director Fernando Hierro explains why reinforcements took so long
The Spanish sporting director affirmed that making hasty decisions in football can be expensive, so the club preferred to get to know the team well before hiring.
Chivas’ sports director Fernando Hierro is confident that the team is on right path as they prepare ahead of the Clausura 2023. Amid unrest from supporters, the Guadalajara club have just announced their first new reinforcements in Víctor el “Pocho” Guzmán and Daniel Ríos.
“I can understand and respect all opinions. Both the club and our sports management have a clear objective, they have a clear idea. We understood that with the arrival of a new coach, a new coaching team, why rush, if we had time. But I am also aware of what is going on around Chivas, of the opinions, the anxiousness of the fans. In that aspect, I think we have maintained our position on remaining calm,” he explained.
“In football, rushing can create problems and we didn’t want to rush, we wanted to assess for ourselves, know and understand where we wanted to go, what our process was. We understood that from day one the coach was very happy with the team he inherited and our intention is to start the season at the highest level that we can”, he added.
“That’s what preseasons are for, for the coach to try things, for the coach to see things, for the coach to get to know all the players. We have tried guys from Tapatío (Chivas feeder team), guys who came on loan from last year. We had to try many things and what we didn’t want is to fall into the precipitation because I believe that the precipitation weakens us”, added Hierro.
Lastly, he applauded the fact that both “Pocho” Guzmán and Daniel Ríos are homegrown players for Guadalajara. They know the institution because they have lived there. “These are guys who have been here, who know the club, know the identity of the club, they know what Chivas means, they know it more than anyone because they have been here.” he explained.
