Chivas - Tigres: Liga MX Clausura 2023 final, as it happened

Tigres win Clausura 2023

A dramatic final at the Estadio Akron as Tigres who trailed (0-2) at the break dug deep in a second half that saw Chivas sit back allowing the visitors to tie the game at 2-2.

Extra time beckoned and Tigres captain Pizarro was the hero for the side from Nuevo Leon nodding home in the 110th minute to give Tigres their eighth Liga MX title.

Clausura 2023 champion: Tigres UANL

That's it...Tigres win.

Sepulveda carded as he clips Quiñones.

Sepulveda carded for dangerous play

Three minutes to be added

Chivas win a free and this is last chance saloon for the home side.

Chivas are now drilling overhit balls into the box and gifting the game to Tigres.

Tension on the face of Paunovic.

As things stand. Tigres will be crowned Liga MX champions.

Two yellows and Cordova is off. The Tigres striker handling the ball on the ground.

Great chance for Chivas but the players fail to create an understanding and the move breaks down.

Despite a tactical masterclass last week at the Azteca, Paunovic was too conservative too soon tonight in his gameplan.

Chivas sat back way too soon and invited far too much pressure.

Tigres captain scored the third

The goal has silenced the Estadio Akron with less than ten minutes on the clock.

Pizarro heads home to edge the side from Nuevo Leon closer to the Clausura 2023 title.

Tigres score in extra time

Aquino (Tigres) carded for time wasting

We're into the final 15' of the 2023 Clausura season.

If there are no goals after this quarter of an hour, then a penalty shoot out will be used to decide the winner of the tournament.

That ends the first spell of extra time.

Quiñones now rocks the post with a left footed effort from an acute angle.

Double chance for Tigres as Gignac has the goal at his mercy but on both occasions Jimenez saves expertly.

The only chances of this first spell of extra time and they fall the way of Tigres.

Torres, Rios and Sanchez on for Chivas

Making way Mozo, Pavel Perez and Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is back on the pitch and we're back to 11 vs 11.

Free for Tigres ... the ball bounces dangerously in the box but drifts wide.

Chivas currently with ten men.

Gonzalez is injured and needs to be replaced as the medical trolley is needed.

Guzman gets carded for protesting.

Extra time at the Akron

Off we go ... first spell of extra time.

Caetano on for Carioca (Tigres switch)

So, the classic game of two halves ends level.

Chivas dominated the first 45 minutes and were excellent value for their 2-0 lead. The home side then proceeded to sit deep and try and hang on to the lead as Tigres scored twice in quick succession to tie the final.

The whistle sounds and we'll have extra time to decide the winner of the 2023 Liga MX Clausura tournament.

Both teams seem exhausted and will now have to face a further 30 minutes of action.

We'll have 4 minutes of added time.

We're into the final minute of the contest.

Should no side score in the remaining time, then we head to extra time, two spells of 15 minutes.

Mozo shoots from distance but the dry pitch forces Guzman to tip the ball wide for a corner.

Carioca shots from the edge of the box and almost finds the roof of the net.

Nerves a plenty from both sides as the clock ticks down.

The ball falls to Pavel Perez who offers a tame shot on goal. The Chivas sub is not enjoying a fruitful spell on the pitch at the Estadio Akron.

What a save from the Tigres keeper as Guzman heads from a corner.

Better from the home side as the Chivas fans find their voice again.

15 left and the game is on a knife edge.

Chivas have to dig deep and totally change their game plan as they have spent the past 20-30 minutes sitting back.

Tigres draw level

Tigres draw level as Cordova ghosts in at the far post to head home.

Twenty minutes remain in Guadalajara and it's the visitors who have the initiative now .

Cordova strikes with an overhead but Jimenez is on hand to save well.

Cordova carded for Tigres.

Chivas were inviting the pressure and now need to amend their game plan.

Tigres back in the game

Tigres are back in the game

The French striker steps up and drills the ball home.

Briseño handles and Tigres are offered a lifeline.

Gignac to take.

Chivas handball and its a spot kick for Tigres.

Changes for Chivas

Alexis and Cisneros off

Brizuela and Pavel Perez on

Chivas pegged deep but Tigres plan A seems to be to fire balls into the box looking for Cignac's head

Fine ball in from the left hand side from Tigres as Jimenez is forced to fist the ball away from danger.

Chivas sitting deep again and happy to strike on the counter,

Tigres dominating possession as they move the ball from left to right looking for an opening.

Tigres create a half chance as Lopez is unable to connect and the Chivas keeper gathers.

Despite the changes, Chivas are still able to repel any pressure from Tigres.

The pitch at the Estadio Akron is still far from perfect.

It's never really had a chance to recover after the stadium hosted a Canelo Alvarez boxing contest a few weeks back.

Two changes for Tigres at the break

Lainez and Vigon are replaced by Gorriaran and Lopez on.

Difficult to see Tigres turning this around with Chivas dominating the game and despite sitting a little deeper now, depriving the Tigres strikers from getting a sniff in front of the target.

Gignac was presented with the best chance for the visitors but headed wide with the goal at his mercy to have made the scoreline 1-1.

Beltran and Vega excellent for Chivas.

Chivas in control at the interval.

Great work from Chivas as Beltran weaves past a handful of Tigres players and the ball is lobbed into the box and Guzman looks to have been caught by a Tigres defender.

Ref says no as the whistle sounds for the break.

Gignac goes close from a direct free kick.

Jimenez has yet to be really tested by the men in yellow tonight.

Vega carded for a late challenge.

We're in added time now as 4 minutes of additional time will be played.

Chivas sitting a little deeper now as Tigres are the side with the ball.

No joy for Cordova or Gignac in attcak so far tonight with Chivas defending well.

Into the final five minutes of the half and it's been one way traffic as Chivas are well on top and Tigres reeling following the two early goals.

The card for Quiñones very much reflective of the frustration being felt by the side from Nuevo Leon.

Quiñones is carded as he whacks the ball in frustration as it misses the Chivas bench by inches.

The good news for Tigres fans is that Gignac is back on his feet and back on the pitch.

Gignac is through and just as the striker was about to pull the trigger, Sepulveda intervenes and clears the danger but the Frencham seems to be in some distress.

Orozco is carded as he clips a Tigres man in the centre of the park.

Orozco seems to twist his ankle as he looks for a team mate from a long range pass.

Cordova strikes wide as Orozco seems okay to carry on.

Tigres look for a way back in the contest and once again Gignac is the target from the dead ball situations the men in yellow win.

The UANL side are shell shocked from the two Chivas goals.

Chivas two ahead

Twenty minutes gone and Chivas in control.

El Pocho was totally unmarked as he stole into the box to poke home from the corner.

Where was the Tigres marking?

More Chivas pressure as they win a corner.

Chivas make it 2-0

Despite the goal lead for the home side, Tigres ahead in terms of possession.
Yellow cards
red cards
fouls won
fouls committed
Contested balls where possession is lost
Ball recoveries

Gignac almost makes it 1-1 as the veteran French striker flashes a header just inches wide of the Chivas goal.

Chivas one up

Alvarado's second goal of the season and probably the most important he will score in the red and white Chivas shirt.

Wonderful left footed strike from the 24-year-old who leaves Guzman with no chance

Chivas strike first and its Alvarado who finds the net

Both teams seem to have shaken off any big game nerves and Tigres are now looking composed with Diego Lainez looking bright on the Tigres right flank.

Aquino strikes from distance and Jiminez spills but Chivas clear the danger.

First shot on goal comes from Tigres as Lainez manages a half volley but the effort is straight at Jiminez in the Chivas goal

Fernando Beltran was excellent in the first leg for Chivas in the home game vs America and was key to the home side's excellent first half display.

Paunovic will look to the No.20 again tonight to pull the strings in the centre of the park.

Better opening minutes from Guadalajara with Vega looking electric down his left hand side.

It's the home side who start the action.

All set in Jalisco....

The atmosphere at the stadium is incredible. The sense of anticipation among the Chivas is total with a desperation of secure the Clausura 2023 title and equal the same amount of titles as Club America.

The Mexican anthem is sung beautifully by Azucena de Jalisco

All set at the Akron Stadium with a massive tifo from the home supporters set to greet the side in red and white.

The Clausura 2023 cup is on display as the teams take to the pitch.

So, Chivas secure the 13th title or UANL set to bag title No.8?

The Guadalajara side have impressed in recent weeks and will have the edge with the partisan home support,

Kick off in Guadalajara now just over five minutes away.

The general feeling is that we'll see a different Chivas from the side we saw in Nuevo Leon on Thursday night with a more offensive focus from Veljko Paunovic with the Serbian coach now being hailed after his decision making last Sunday in the semi-final against America at the Azteca.

Tigres experienced being cited as the strength for the side from Monterrey.

The Estadio Akron is awash with red and white with every one of the 46,000 tickets sold out.

Tigres are not alone with pockets of yellow dotted around the arena.

Tigres XI

This is the starting line up for the visitors today as veteran French striker Gignac leads the strike force with today offering Diego Lainez a wonderful window to show doubters what he can do.

Chivas XI

Liga MX has confirmed the Chivas XI.

Cisneros leads the attack assisted by Vega, Alvarado with Guzman behind the front man.

Motivational banners adorn Tigres dressing room

A series of banners from Tigres fan groups adorn the Tigres dressing room at the Estadio Akron.

Anticipation in Guadalajara

Chivas fans used any means necessary to make the journey to the Estadio Akron on the outskirts of the city centre as kick-off looms.

Extra time and penalties a possibility

Unlike the liguilla quarter and semifinal games, should tonight's game end in a draw, then the final league positions will have no bearing in deciding the winner and a further 30 minutes will be played with a penalty shoot out set to be used should the sides still be level.

Objects launched at Tigres bus

With little or no security to protect the Tigres team bus, a number of items impacted on the vehicle as it made its way towards the Estadio Akron.

Robert Siboldi guided Tigres to a seventh-placed finish in the regular phase. The team followed that up by beating Puebla by the minimum in the repechaje and edged both of their next ties against Toluca and Rayados. Brazilian centre-back Samir Caetano was a regular starter during the league tournament but has hardly featured since the quarter finals. He is now over the hamstring injury that kept him out of the return leg against Monterrey and both legs of the semis; he watched last week’s first leg against Chivas from the bench and it remains to be seen if Siboldi will field him from the start on Sunday. Igor Lichnovsky is an option to partner Diego Reyes in the back four or captain Guido Pizarro, who dropped back in the first leg.

Out of the two finalists, Chivas enjoyed the better regular season. Paunovic’s team finished third as the top scorers in the league (36 goals for) and qualified directly to the quarter finals.

They beat Atlas and América on their way to the final. They also won their meeting with Tigres during the regular season - Gilberto Sepúlveda and Ronaldo Cisneros found the net in the 1-2 win on matchday 9 back in February. There is only one player on the casualty list - left winger Carlos Cisneros suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee during the semi-final against América. Alexis Vegas is expected to line up in his place. Otherwise, Guadalajara will be at full strength

The Chivas squad have arrived at the Estadio Akron with thousands of fans in attendance already outside the arena.

Sadly, despite a high police presence, there have already been a handful of scuffles between rival fans.

Last Liga MX title wins

Chivas Guadalajara and Tigres head into tonight’s contest at the Estadio Akron to decide the winner of the Clausura 2023 final. The contest remains wide open after Thursday’s first leg at Estadio Universitario which ended goalless.

Guadalajara are seeking their 13th domestic crown with Tigres out to bag title number eight. The last time the ‘Sacred Flock’ won a Liga MX title was against tonight’s rivals - they edged Tigres 4-3 on aggregate to win the Clausura 2017. La U meanwhile, have seven titles under their belt and were crowned champions fairly recently, winning the Clausura 2019.

Chivas-Tigres: head-to-head

Historically (during Liga MX short seasons), there is little to choose between both sides with Tigres having 20 games with Chivas on one less with 19 wins.

20 games have been tied with the Sacred Flock having netted 74 times against Tigres' 72 goals.

Both sides are no strangers to Liga MX championship wins with Chivas looking to record a 13th title that would see the side from Guadalajara draw level with Club America with Tigres aiming to record an eighth win.

The tie is very much alive after both sides played out a 0-0 draw on Thursday night at 'El Volcan'.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the second leg of the 2023 Liga MX Clausura final as Chivas de Guadalajara face Tigres UANL.
