Chivas vs América: the best attack against the third best defense
The last big victory took place back in the 2019 edition of the Apertura and in went in the favor of the Águilas who dominated 4-1.
Beyond the passion and hopes generated by the 185th edition of Súper Clásico between Chivas and América, the coldness of the numbers in Clausura 2023 indicates that this weekend’s game pits the best attack of the first eleven matchdays against the third best defense, that of the Guadalajara hosts.
Chivas defense vs América attack
Up to this point in the championship, the Coapa team has scored a total of 23 goals, making them the most productive offensive team. This highlights the importance of offensive power in the 184 regular season and league duels played between these teams. In terms of victories, América holds the advantage with 64 wins to the rojiblanco team’s 62.
Breaking down América’s tally, Henry Martin leads the team with 10 goals -- and he loves playing Chivas -- followed by Diego Valdez with four, and Jonathan Rodríguez with three. Leonardo Suárez has contributed two goals, while Roger Martínez, Alejandro Zendejas, Richard Sánchez, and Brian Rodríguez have each added one goal to the team’s overall number.
Henry Martín is currently the América star who has had the most success against Chivas, having scored five goals since joining the Águilas in the 2016-2017 season. However, the offensive efforts of the Águilas will be met with resistance from the solid defense of the Rebaño Sagrado, who have only conceded 9 goals so far, ranking just behind León (7) and Tigres (8).
One potential obstacle could be goalkeeper Miguel Jiménez, who has yet to fully earn the forgiveness of the fans due to his mistakes in previous matches against Querétaro and Puebla. This may lead to some apprehension going into this latest edition of the classic matchup.
It’s worth noting that the last time América had a significant win over Chivas was in the Apertura 2019, where they came out on top with a 4-1 scoreline. Francisco Córdova scored twice, while Emanuel Aguilera and Henry Martín also found the back of the net, with Alan Pulido scoring the lone goal for Chivas.
As for the hosts, the last time they scored four or more goals against América was in the 1996 season, when they secured a 5-0 victory. Gabriel García scored twice, with Ramón Ramírez, Gabriel García, and Sergio Pacheco also contributing to the result.
