Christian Pulisic returns to Dortmund and faces his heir, Gio Reyna in the Champions League

Following the UCL round of 16 draw on Monday, Captain America will be facing his old team in the German city where his story began.

Christian Pulisic vuelve a Dortmund y enfrenta a su heredero, Gio Reyna en Champions League

The draw for the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League threw up some fabulous ties and one will pit two of the most important stars of the United States team that will be teammates at the Qatar World Cup 2022. On one side, the Chelsea of Christian Pulisic and on the other side, Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund.

Pulisic has familiar Champions League rivals

The duel means Pulisic’s return to Dortmund, the German city where he saw his own success story develop, but many also see Reyna as having the potential to be his successor in the team led by Gregg Berhalter.

A few days before the start of the World Cup, the Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund clash looks in the balance given their current state of affairs and we should remember too that rumours persist that Pulisic could actually leave the Blues in the January transfer market, before the round of 16.

Pulisic’s numbers at Dortmund

Before arriving at Chelsea in the Premier League, Pulisic spent four years wearing the Dortmund shirt, where he played 90 games scoring 13 times, in addition to providing another 18 assists in the German Bundesliga. In the Champions League he did not shine so much, with just two goals and three assists, including one against Real Madrid in 2016.

Now it’s his turn to be on the other side, and despite occasionally shining, the 24-year-old forward hopes to have a great World Cup that can help him solidify his place at Stamford Bridge, or force a positive move, which would kill the above narrative.

Reyna, just 19 years old, is considered a potential new leader of the United States for the 2026 World Cup. He has 20 goals and 23 assists in all the competitions he has played with Dortmund, and he wants to be an important part so that the Germans continue writing their history in the Champions League.
