Club América and Cruz Azul will not play at Estadio Azteca in 2023

The two Mexico City based teams are in search of a new stadium next year due to renovation work that is set to start at Estadio Azteca next year.

Club América and Cruz Azul have been sharing the Estadio Azteca since 2018 but they are in search of a new venue starting in 2023 as the Estadio Azteca will undergo a remodulation.

The historic stadium that is located in Mexico City will be redeveloped so it is ready to host World Cup matches in 2026. According to the latest reports, Club América and Cruz Azul are considering playing at Estadio Azulgrana next tournament and both franchises have started negotiations with the owners of the venue to strike a deal.

Three teams will share one stadium

This will be a problem for the Liga MX regarding the schedules next season because Club América and Cruz Azul will share the stadium with Atlanta, currently playing in the second division. The solution that the league is considering is that América and Cruz Azul play at home every other weekend and Atlante on Tuesdays.

The Liga MX sides will continue to share the Estadio Azteca for the remainder of the 2022 Apertura tournament. The last event that will be hosted in that stadium will be a Bad Bunny concert in December and the redevelopment work will begin in January 2023.
