Club América and Henry Martín the big winners at Mexico’s Balón de Oro awards
Las Águilas picked up multiple awards at the ceremony at the weekend, with striker Martín taking home a hat-trick of prizes.
Liga MX’s biggest and brightest stars were in the spotlight at the weekend, with players and coaches alike rewarded for their achievements at club level at Mexican soccer’s Balón de Oro awards ceremony. While several winners were predicated by most, there were also a few that caught some by surprise.
Although the event took place on Saturday 24 June, the league, along with the organisers, opted to broadcast it 24 hours later, which resulted in a few winners being leaked to the public despite a concerted effort to keep things secret. In this day and age, however, it was hardly a shock that that wasn’t completely possible.
Full list of Balón de Oro winners
As always, awards were handed out in whole host of different categories, with Club América winning in four (arguably five) of them. Mexico striker Henry Martín was the big winner, taking home both the Player of the Year and the Forward of the Year trophies, as well as the Top Goalscorer prize.
Teammates Diego Valdés and Emilio Lara were voted Attacking Midfielder of the Year and Rookie of the Year respectively, while Kevin Álvarez, who has just joined Las Águilas from Pachuca, picked up the Full-back of the Year award for his performances for Los Tuzos.
Liga MX Femenil awards
For the first time ever, there was a Female Head Coach of the Year award, which was won by Mila Martínez, who recently left Juárez for Tigres. Pachuca forward Charyln Corral was named both female Player of the Year and Top Goalscorer in Liga MX Femenil.
