Club América have been dealt a cruel blow ahead of the final few matches of Liga MX’s regular season and the start of the Apertura 2023 playoffs. Winger Brian Rodríguez, who was forced off in the weekend victory at Monterrey, will undergo surgery on Tuesday and is set for a spell on the sidelines.

Rodríguez suffers dislocated kneecap

The Uruguayan suffered a dislocated kneecap following a reckless challenge from Rayados defender Jesús Gallardo, which sparked controversy, with the Águilas attacker accusing his opponent of deliberately injuring him.

Rodríguez travelled to Guadalajara on Tuesday to be examined by a surgeon, who deemed surgery was required. His recovery time has not been specified (it will “depend on his evolution”, according to an América statement), although other sportspeople who have undergone operations on a similar injury have been out for a minimum of three to four months.

In-form America already qualified for playoffs

The first of many matches Rodríguez will be forced to sit out is Wednesday’s matchday 15 fixture away to Atlético San Luis. As well as the being without the winger, head coach André Jardine will also be without Julián Quiñones, who has also picked up an injury, and the suspended Igor Lichnoskyi.

América became the first team to qualify for the playoffs thanks to Saturday’s win in Monterrey, which extended their unbeaten run in Liga MX to 13 matches. Jardine’s side have won their last five games and have scored 13 times in their last four fixtures.
