Club América Femenil lose friendly game against Angel City FC
The Eagles failed to get a positive result in their second game of the year against a US side.
America held a friendly match as part of International Women’s Day against Angel City FC of the United States, and once again Las Águilas could not dig out a positive results against a team from the States: a few weeks ago they also lost against OL Reign.
The first game early, just fell 5 minutes into the game, whenAlyssa Thompson received a ball in midfield and began to drive forward, dribbling past her opponents at speed, reaching the box. She swept past Itzel González and with the goal open, simply tapped the ball across the line from a tight angle in a tremendous solo effort. From that point on, América had very few attacks to the opponent’s area and went into the break a goal down and with their heads hanging.
Angel City came storming out of the tunnel and shocked Las Águilas right after the restart: Thompson slipped the ball through to Paige Nielsen after a gap opened between the América defenders. She took a touch and scooped a lovely shot over the goalkeeper who could only try to salvage the disastrous position she had been put in by the movement and vision of her opponents. Fortunately for the Mexican side, the flag was raised: offside.
The second goal came just ten minutes later, with Neilson getting on the end of a scramble in the box to fire a volley into the corner with minimal space for her to shoot let alone twist her body around and fire a semi-overhead kick into the net. The faces of the Mexican side were a mixture of frustration and dejection; a thrashing was being avoided on the scoreboard but not on the pitch.
To seal Angel City’s triumph, Simone Charley appeared at on 84 minutes, collecting a long pass between the lines. She burned past the defence and arrived at the area before taking on the goalkeeper and tapping the ball home for number three.
América return from the United States with another three goals conceded on their tally: first OL Reign and now Angel City. The signs are not good.
How are América doing in the Clausura 2023?
Given their last win against Pachuca, Las Águilas jumped to third position and now sit below Rayadas and Chivas. Their next clash is against Atlas, and after that two of the most difficult matches of the regular season are coming up, Tigres and Chivas, the latter at the Azteca Stadium.
