The countdown to the Apertura 2025 is well underway. Liga MX clubs are deep into preparations for the upcoming campaign, and while the spotlight often falls on high-profile transfers, it’s the internal moves - those subtle shifts behind the scenes - that can sometimes have the biggest impact.

One of the most talked-about developments this offseason has been Diego Valdés’s departure from Club América. A cornerstone of Las Águilas’ recent three-peat and widely regarded as one of the finest players ever to wear the América jersey, Valdés leaves behind not just a legacy - but also a legendary jersey number.

Who will be Valdés’s heir at No. 10?

Speculation quickly swirled around who might inherit the iconic number he has left vacant. Several names were floated, but it appears the club has made its decision - and it’s a significant one.

According to sources close to the team, the honor of wearing Valdés’s number will go to none other than Alejandro Zendejas. The Mexican-American midfielder has reportedly been chosen to carry the torch, donning what many consider the most storied number in the club’s history.

With this move, Zendejas joins an elite lineage of players who have worn the famed jersey, including Cristóbal Ortega, Eduardo Bacas, Edú, Luis García, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Fabián Estay, Hugo Castillo, Salvador Cabañas, Osvaldo Martínez, Daniel Montenegro, Cecilio Domínguez, Giovani dos Santos, Sebastián Córdova, and, of course, Valdés.
