Club América is in the midst of a serious crisis - one that, paradoxically, reflects the club’s lofty standards.

Worst run under Jardine

In just the first half of 2025, the team has stumbled in five major competitions: the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the Clausura 2025 (missing out on a historic four-peat), the Club World Cup Play-In, the Campeón de Campeones, and now, they’re on the brink of elimination in the Leagues Cup.

This isn’t the kind of adversity that offers comfort. Even though América can point to three domestic titles in four finals as a sign of success, the current stretch marks the worst statistical period under head coach André Jardine since he took the reins.

What is América’s recent record?

In their last 10 competitive matches, Los Azulcremas have managed just two wins in regulation time - a record that stands as the lowest win rate over any 10-game span in Jardine’s 118-match tenure. Here’s a breakdown of those recent fixtures:

  • América (8) 3-3 (7) Minnesota United - Leagues Cup
  • América (1) 2-2 (3) Real Salt Lake City - Leagues Cup
  • Necaxa 1-1 América - Apertura 2025
  • América 1-3 Toluca - Campeón de Campeones 2024/25
  • América 3-1 Tijuana - Apertura 2025
  • FC Juárez 1-1 América - Apertura 2025, Liga MX
  • LAFC 2-1 América - Club World Cup Play-In
  • Toluca 2-0 América - Clausura 2025
  • América 0-0 Toluca - Clausura 2025
  • América 2-1 Cruz Azul - Clausura 2025

That’s a tally of two wins, five draws and three losses - with the defeats coming in some of the most consequential matches of the year.

Apertura América’s last hope in 2025

The defensive frailties, especially evident in the Leagues Cup, have been glaring. Conceding five goals in two matches against MLS opposition has left América with just three points from two group-stage games, making it highly unlikely they’ll advance to the knockout rounds.

If América fails to progress in the Leagues Cup, it will mark the sixth missed opportunity for silverware this year. That leaves only the Apertura 2025 as a chance for redemption.
