Club América will need to fix road issues to beat Pachuca
The most successful team in Liga MX history has lost six games outside of Estadio Azteca, but they still managed to advance to the semi-finals.
Club América are looking to win their 14th league title in Liga MX and are now two games away from securing a place in the final. The Eagles defeated Puebla 4-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals last week and they will face the number one seeded team in the next round, Club Pachuca.
The Eagles started the tournament at the bottom of the table, but interim manager Fernando Ortíz took them to fourth place in the standings at the end of the regular season. América managed to avoid the wildcard round and now they are the top contender to win the 2022 Clausura title. This is the first time in three years that they have reached the semi-finals.
América not happy travellers
Club América have struggled when they have played outside Estadio Azteca in the playoffs. The capital-based team has lost all six away games and will need to improve if they want to beat Pachuca, with the second leg of the semi-final to be played at Estadio Hidalgo.
On top of that, the Eagles have not won on the road since the 2019 Apertura tournament, when they defeated Tigres UANL 4-2 at Estadio Universitario. Since then they have lost six consecutive away games against Morelia, Monterrey, Chivas, Pachuca, Pumas and Puebla.
In recent history, América has only won two games out of ten on the road, when they defeated Tigres and León respectively. It’s a different story when the Eagles play at home: at Estadio Azteca they have six wins, one draw and three defeats in their last 10 playoff matches.
