Club América’s 2025 Leagues Cup opener didn’t go as planned, as the Mexican giants fell to Real Salt Lake in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The match, held at America First Field, delivered plenty of excitement for fans, with both teams battling to a draw in regulation before heading to the spot.

Brian Rodríguez (42’) and Erick Sánchez (90+7’) found the back of the net for América, after U.S. rising star Diego Luna (16’) had opened the scoring for Real Salt Lake. William Agada added a second for the MLS side in first-half stoppage time (45+2’).

Águilas miss out on bonus point

With the score level after 90 minutes, the game went to penalties, where Real Salt Lake prevailed 3-1. The loss continues América’s struggles in tournament play, still haunted by their failed bid for a three-peat after falling to Toluca in last season’s final.

Under Leagues Cup rules, a draw in regulation earns both teams one point, but a penalty shootout determines who gets an additional point. Real Salt Lake walked away with two points, while América settled for one.

Looking ahead, Club América will face Minnesota United in their next league phase match, while Real Salt Lake prepares to take on Atlético de San Luis.
