CLUB WORLD CUP
Club León’s Club World Cup participation may complicate Liga MX Liguilla dates
Following their 3-1 aggregate win over LAFC in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League final, the Mexican side will represent the continent at the CWC.
Liga MX side Club León secured their first ever place at a FIFA Club World Cup with their 3-1 aggregate win over MLS giants earlier this year with the victory seeing La Fiera represent CONCACAF at the forthcoming tournament which will be staged in Saudi Arabia in December.
The Liga MX side will enter the competition in the second round and face AFC champion, Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds on 15 December.
Should León advance they would Manchester City in the semifinal on 19 December with the final scheduled for 22 December.
Liga MX play-in
On Sunday night, Las Panzas Verdes qualified for the play-in stage of the Liga MX Apertura 2023 postseason with a 2-1 win over FC Juarez to secure a ninth place finish where they now face Mazatlan in the first round of the play-in.
Should Leon advance to the Liguilla, the club could have a potential fixture overload with the Liguilla set to commence in December with semifinals scheduled for 6 and 9 December when Nicolás Larcamón’s men should be getting in shape for the Club World Cup challenge.
A potential Liga MX final featuring Club Leon, could see the current projected dates for this final stage of the championship of 14 December (for the first leg) and 17 (for the second leg) being moved to 27 December and 30 should León reach the final.
