Manchester City’s win over Inter Milan in Saturday’s Champions League final at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, means Pep Guardiola adds his third Champions League after the two achieved with Barça (2009 and 2011). Simone Inzhagi was left outside the select few coaches who have lifted the trophy, a 43-man elite group who have led their teams to European Cup glory.

Ancelotti is the coach who has won the tournament the most times: four. The Italian coach stands above legends such as Bob Paisley and Zidane, with three titles each, who are now joined by Guardiola.

The top scorer in the Italian league is known as il Capocannoniere - it could well be said that Carlo Ancelotti is ‘il capo allenatore’ (boss of the coaches) in the Champions League. Curiously, his relationship with the European Cup began in a very different way, when he was a player for Roma, with whom he had won the Scudetto the previous season, he couldn’t play the final against Liverpool, in 1984, held in Rome no less and where Liverpool won in the penalty shootout after the match finished 1-1 in regulation time and at the end of extra time.

Bob Paisley is a Liverpool legend. Possibly the greatest. The coach, born in Sunderland in 1919, was part of the Liverpool set up for almost half a century. First as a player (as a defender), then as a physiotherapist and coach, and finally as a manager. He passed away on February 14, 1996, in Liverpool.

Paisley’s legacy is remembered as Liverpool’s most glorious period. Between 1974 and 1983, Paisley led Liverpool to win six league titles, three European Cups, one UEFA Cup, three League Cups, six Community Shields and one UEFA Super Cup. Europe. Paisley was also the first coach to win three European Cups with the same club. Later Zidane would match him with his three titles with Madrid.

Apart from these three coaches, another 16 have won the title twice. In addition, seven coaches have won the tournament as player and as coach: Miguel Muñoz, Trapattoni, Cruyff, Ancelotti, Rijkaard, Guardiola and Zidane. Those with the most titles are Muñoz and Ancelotti, with five. Both won two as a player and three as a coach.

Six coaches have won the title with two different clubs: Ernst Happel (Feyenoord and Hamburg), Ottmar Hitzfield (Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich), Mourinho (Porto and Inter Milan), Jupp Heynckess (Real Madrid and Bayern Munich), Ancelotti (Milan and Real Madrid) and now Guardiola with Barcelona and City.
