W GOLD CUP
Colombia’s possible starting XI against USWNT in W Gold Cup
Here’s how Colombia could line up when they take on USWNT in the W Gold Cup.
The group stage is over. The first edition of the Women’s Gold Cup has entered the knockout rounds. And for Colombia, the quarter-final match represents an opportunity to make history against one of the best teams on the planet. This Sunday, the Tricolor will face the United States (3 March, 8:15pm ET/5:15pm PT) in Los Angeles in what is just one game in a talent-packed quarter-final round that promises to excite.
At BMO Stadium, the national team will seek a place in the semi-finals and their first victory against the U.S., a rival they have never beaten. Across 12 meetings, Colombia have 10 defeats, 2 draws, only 2 goals scored and 35 conceded.
Here’s how Colombia may line up to face the U.S...
There could well be few changes with respect to the starting line-up that played the last group stage match against Puerto Rico (a 2-0 win). The defence should remain the same, with Ángela Barón winning the battle against Daniela Arias and joining Jorelyn Carabalí in the centre-back pairing.
The main doubt is in midfield and the possible return of Daniela Montoya to the lineup. The Atlético Nacional midfielder, who started Colombia’s first two matches in the W Gold Cup, could reappear in the XI to start against the United States.
Possible line up (4-2-3-1): Natalia Giraldo; Carolina Arias, Jorelyn Carabalí, Ángela Barón, Manuela Vanegas; Liana Salazar, Daniela Montoya; Ilana Izquierdo, Marcela Restrepo; Linda Caicedo and Catalina Usme.
