Antonio Rüdiger’s moment of madness during Real Madrid’s 0–1 loss to Getafe on Monday night has sparked outrage across Germany. The Madrid central defender went way over the top, in his attempt to wrestle the ball from Diego Rico - digging his knee into his opponent’s face while he was on the ground. Bizarrely, the incident passed without any punishment although many believed it to be a clear red card offense.

Germany speechless after Rüdiger loses his cool

A Bild opinion column was especially harsh, saying it “wasn’t a hard foul — it was practically an assault,” a moment that “left everyone speechless” and reignited the debate over Rüdiger’s behavior in high‑pressure situations.

The piece argues that the German international has once again shown “he can’t control himself — and that’s not someone you can take to the World Cup.”

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann has already made it clear that no player is untouchable and that “behavior that repeatedly violates the basic rules of the sport is unacceptable.” Bild also pointed out that Germany, a four‑time world champion, has strong defensive alternatives, meaning leaving out the Real Madrid center‑back wouldn’t create a sporting crisis.

German media didn’t hesitate to revisit Rüdiger’s long list of recent controversies — from provocative gestures to suspensions and mocking opponents — painting a pattern that, in their view, goes beyond what can be tolerated. While acknowledging his importance as a leader within the national team, the conclusion was blunt: “Too much of the bad stuff. And if you don’t change, you stay home.” A line that captures the frustration in Germany after Rüdiger’s latest misstep.
