Confirmed: Yon de Luisa to leave post as president of the Mexican Football Federation
The Mexican Football Federation have confirmed in a statement that president Yon de Luisa will leave his post.
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) is going through a crucial moment of change with regards to its structure and now, two weeks after the appointment of Diego Cocca as national coach, the FMF has confirmed that it will soon have a new man in charge, with Yon de Luisa not running for reelection as president of the soccer organisation.
According to Rubén Rodríguez, the president of the FMF had put his resignation on the table to the Mexican soccer clubs as he does not agree with some ways of working related to the Mexican National Team. Although it has since been revealed that de Luisa will complete his current term as president before leaving his post.
Who would have had to accept de Luisa’s resignation?
Being the highest representative in the Mexican Football Federation, those who have the last word on a possible departure are the owners of the clubs, who would have had to evaluate the resignation of de Luisa and will later make the decision of who replaces him
During the Fox Sports Radio program, journalist Rodríguez commented that in recent weeks, de Luisa has been seen looking fed up and annoyed at the Federation facilities; he has been excluded from various events and decisions regarding the Mexican National Team; he was even absent from the presentation of Diego Cocca as El Tri’s head coach.
How long has Yon De Luisa been in the FMF?
Yon de Luisa publicly introduced himself as president of the Mexican Football Federation on July 25, 2018, practically a month after Mexico was eliminated from the World Cup in Russia.
During his tenure, the Mexican National Team won a Gold Cup and a Bronze Medal at the last Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, however, in the last year his tenure has been in check due to the constant failures of the Mexican representatives such as the women’s and youth teams, which both were left out of both their respective World Cups and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
When will Yon de Luisa leave his post as FMF president?
The Mexican Football Federation announced in a statement that Yon de Luisa would not run for reelection as head of the organisation. His term will therefore end in May, when a new president will take over. De Luisa will continue in his role until then.
“Today, the president of the Mexican Football Federation, Yon de Luisa, informed all members of the Owners’ Assembly of his decision not to run for reelection as president of the FMF for the term 2023-2026, in order for the new occupant of the position to be able to adjust to the new visions and objectives of the FMF.
“The next Owners’ Assembly is scheduled to take place in May. In the meantime, Yon de Luisa will remain in his role as the head of the FMF,” the statement reads.
