Copa América 2024 draw: Honduras’ possible rivals if they qualify
The Copa América draw takes place on Thursday. We look at who La H could be drawn against if they make it to the tournament via the Play-In.
Honduras and Costa Rica were both eliminated in the CONCACAF Nations League quarter finals - losing to Mexico and Panama, respectively. But as one door closes, another one opens - they may have missed their first chance to qualify for Copa América 2024, but they will have a second chance to book a place at the tournament via the Play-In - a playoff contest between the four losing quartfinalists. Honduras and Costa Rica will now face each other with the winner claiming one of the last two available tickets to next summer’s showpiece in the United States.
In the other Play-In tie, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago will battle it out for for the other ticket. These two matches will take place once the tournament groups are known - the draw will take place in Miami on Thursday 7 December. Provisionally, both Play-In games have been scheduled for 23 March 2024.
The draw will follow a four-pot seeding system with the top seeds in Pot 1 and the remaining teams occupying the following pots in order, based on their FIFA ranking. That means the four top seeded teams: Argentina, Brazil, United States and Mexico will be in Pot 1, while Panama, Jamaica plus the two winners of the Play-In will make up Pot 4.
Honduras’ possible rivals - if they qualify
If Honduras manages to beat Costa Rica in the Play-In, they will qualify for Copa América 2024, falling directly into Pot 4 of the draw. Their rivals will come from the other three pots, one from each. So they will be drawn in a group which will feature one of the top seeds (Argentina, Brazil, United States or Mexico) plus a team from Pots 2 and 3.
