Lionel Messi talks Copa América, World Cup and Lewandowski

Now that we know Argentina's group stage opponents for the 2024 Copa America, there is another big question for fans of La Albiceleste: Will Lionel Messi play at the Copa America?

Who are CONCACAF 5 and 6?

Good question! So far only 14 of the 16 teams in the 2024 Copa America have been confirmed, with the other two places to be decided in CONCACAF playoffs next March.

For now those potential qualifiers are known simply as CONCACAF 5 and CONCACAF 6, the final two members of CONCACAF's six entrants.

CONCACAF 5 is the winner of Canada and Trinidad & Tobago

CONCACAF 6 is the winner of Honduras and Costa Rica.

USMNT Copa America group

Hosts USMNT were drawn in Group C of the 2024 Copa America. They drew in-form Uruguay in Pot 2, perhaps the toughest option, but got more favourable draws with Panama and Bolivia in the following two Pots.

Two teams will progress from each group, so Gregg Berhalter's side should be very confident of making it to the knockout stages.

William Gittins

And finally, the final team in Group B is Jamaica!

William Gittins

The final team in Group D is CONCACAF 6, one of the playoff teams.

William Gittins

Bolivia are joining USMNT in Group C.

William Gittins

Ah, pardon!

Bolivia cannot play in Group B, there will need to be a reshuffle of the Pot 4 teams.

William Gittins

Next in Group B, it's Bolivia!

William Gittins

Group A get one of the CONCACAF playoff teams as their final entrant!

William Gittins

So, three-quarters of the way through, everything looks fairly equal so far.

There's no stand-out 'group of death'.

William Gittins

And Group D get Paraguay!

William Gittins

USMNT are joined in Group C by Panama!

William Gittins

Added to Group B, it's Venezuela!

William Gittins

Chile join Group A!

William Gittins

Brazil's first companions in Group D...

Colombia!

William Gittins

Group C now, and alongside USMNT...

Uruguay! One of the powers.

William Gittins

Joining Mexico in Group B...

It's Ecuador!

William Gittins

So far 14 teams have secured qualification for the 2024 tournament. There are four other teams still in contention, two of which will make it to the group stage.

Those 16 teams will be divided into four groups. We are about to find out the nature of those groups.

William Gittins

We're ready for the draw!

There's been a reshuffle on stage and a series of podiums have been added, signifying the start of the draw for the 2024 Copa America.

William Gittins

In the meantime...

Big thanks are given to Lionel Scaloni for a few brief words on stage and it looks like the big moment has finally arrived!

The draw for the 2024 Copa America is here, after a very short break...

William Gittins

The Copa America trophy is brought on-stage by Lionel Scaloni. As head coach of reigning champions Argentina he is the one trusted to return the silverware back to the draw venue.

He has already picked up a World Cup with the Albiceleste, can he add another major trophy next summer?

William Gittins

We await the draw, let's have a look at the ball

I spoke too soon. We're now being treated to a lengthy explainer on the process of upkeeping and updating the iconic Copa America trophy.

It's interesting stuff, but it tells us little about the key fixtures to look forward to next summer.

Have another look at the new ball...

William Gittins

Birds and balls dealt with, it looks like we may finally be onto the draw!

Uruguayan legend Diego Godin strides on-stage in a meaningful manner.

William Gittins

Next up, we are told that there's another key figure that we need to meet...

It's the official 2024 Copa America soccer ball! Sportswear giants Puma have designed the new ball, white with splashes of red and blue in zig-zagging geometric patterns.

It's quite nice, surprisingly understated.

William Gittins

Meet Capitan!

Big news from Miami! We now know the identity of the official mascot for the 2024 Copa America!

It's Capitan, a bird-man hybrid who appears pretty eager to show off his break-dancing skills on stage.

William Gittins

If anyone was fearing that the move to Miami might have added an unnecessary splash of glitz and glamour, fear not! It's been a pretty dry start to proceedings for the 2024 Copa America draw.

We've had speeches from the presidents of CONCACAF, FIFA and now CONMEBOL, but it looks like we're finally getting onto the real action!

William Gittins

CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez is really enjoying his moment in the spotlight, taking the opportunity to tell the gathered crowd that his federation "does not care about money," focusing instead on the good of the game.

He has big plans for the 2024 tournament: "This time will be different, different to anything in the world."

William Gittins

After starting off in English, Infantino continues in very fluent Spanish.

William Gittins

Alejandro Dominguez, president of CONMEBOL, now takes to the stage to welcome everyone to the draw this evening. As head of CONMEBOL he leads the ten South American nations and is the organiser of the Copa America tournaments.
