Group stage: draw and composition of the groups

The 32 qualified teams (28 that entered directly, plus the four from the Preliminary Phase) will be divided into eight groups of four clubs each.

As established in the competition regulations, published on the CONMEBOL website, the composition is established according to the champions of the Copa Libertadores 2022, Copa Sudamericana 2022 and the CONMEBOL ranking as of Dec. 9, 2022.

  1. The 2022 Copa Libertadores Champion team will be placed directly as the seed of Group A.
  2. To establish the seeding of the other seven groups (B to H), the CONMEBOL club ranking as of Dec. 9, 2022 will be used.
  3. The second line will be made up of the 2022 Copa Sudamericana champion team, plus the seven subsequent teams from the club ranking.
  4. The third line will be made up by the next eight teams in the ranking.
  5. The fourth line will be made up of the four teams coming from the Preliminary Phase (G1, G2, G3 and G4) plus the next four teams in the club ranking.
  6. In the Group Phase, each team will play one match at home and one as a visitor against each of the other teams in the same group.
  7. The teams that finish first and second in each group will qualify for the round of 16.
  8. The eight teams that finish third in their respective groups will qualify for the 2023 Copa Sudamericana round of 16 playoffs.

Note: In the event that the 2022 CONMEBOL South American Champion —due to its location in the CONMEBOL Club ranking as of Dec. 9, 2022— should be seeded, said position and privilege granted by ranking will prevail due to its condition CONMEBOL Sudamericana champion, ranking within the first line clubs.
