The Germans come into this one knowing that nothing less than a win will do, while Costa Rica will know they also have a chance of winning if they can down their more illustrious opponents. With everything to play for on Group E’s last day, here are your odds and predictions.

Costa Rica vs Germany: The lay of the land

Though it may be hard to believe, should Germany lose to Costa Rica on Thursday not only will the four-time World Cup champions exit the tournament at the group stage, they will do so for the second consecutive World Cup. At the moment, ‘Die Nationalmannschaft’ sits at the bottom of the group with just one point. What that means, is that this is a case of win and hope. Indeed, though victory against ‘Los Ticos’ will certainly improve their chances of advancing, they will need a favorable result in the Spain vs Japan game. Of course, the same can also be said for their opponents who have three points following their win over Japan. If Costa Rica can beat Germany, they will book a spot in the Round of 16, though a draw - depending on the Spain vs Japan game - could be enough to see them through. Needless to say, a loss would most definitely mean ‘Adios World Cup.’ Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.

Do or Die for Die Nationalmannschaft

While it’s true that the Germans haven’t been at their best in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, one should never forget that this is still Germany. Within their ranks they have one of the hottest young prospects in football today in the form of 19-year-old Jamal Musiala. The attacking midfielder has already proven himself to be an integral part of European superpower Bayern Munich and it’s clear there is more to come. In the 14 matches that he’s played this season, he ranks fourth in the Bundesliga in goals (nine) and assists (six). In truth, Costa Rica will have their work cut out for them when they face that includes players like Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sane, Kai Havertz and of course the veteran Thomas Muller. We should also mention the man between the sticks, Manuel Neuer. Now 36-years-old, Neuer is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers ever to play the game and has won everything there is to win including the World Cup in 2014.

Costa Rica aren’t under pressure

Though they were soundly beaten by Spain in their opening match, Los Ticos responded with a win against Japan - who beat Germany - to keep themselves in the running for a spot in the last 16. It must be said, that their victory was in large part due to their very experienced goalkeeper, Keylor Navas. At 35-years-old, Navas was key in preserving the clean sheet in the 1-0 win against Japan. The former Real Madrid man was named CONCACAF Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year for three years straight from 2016 to 2018 and without doubt will be essential to Costa Rica’s hopes on Thursday. Quite frankly, Los Ticos are coming off a solid performance against Japan in which they only allowed three shots on goal. With their destiny in their own hands at this point, they will not be under the kind of pressure that their opponents are surely feeling. Don’t be surprised if we get a shock in this one.

Costa Rica vs Germany: The Prediction

It’s an interesting affair this one. On the one side, pedigree would tell you expect the Germans to get the win with ease. On the other, we’ve got a World Cup that’s been full of surprises and moreover a Costa Rican side that’s definitely capable of competing with the best despite their opening loss. That said, there are a few factors to consider: Costa Rica is an older side, the Germans are desperate to avoid elimination and Leroy Sane has returned for them in attack. We’ve got Germany to take this one by a score of 3-1.
