Barcelona sporting director Deco has discussed how Mexican coach Rafa Márquez could be handed a role with the club’s first-team squad.

With Xavi Hernández recently announcing that he will leave the club in the summer, Barcelona will have to appoint a new head coach to lead the club going forward and Márquez has, in recent times, been linked with the role.

Deco on Márquez

The former Mexico international is currently in charge of Barça Atlètic and in an interview with OnzeTv3 on Wednesday, Deco spoke about the 44-year-old and how he could end up being promoted to the first team.

The former Barcelona and Portugal playmaker explained that Márquez would only be involved with the first team in the case of an emergency. He said: “Márquez is a person who is growing within the club but he would only be the first-team coach in case of emergency.”

Barcelona’s next head coach

Brighton & Hove Albion’s highly-rated boss Roberto de Zerbi, Girona’s Míchel and former Germany and Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick are some of the other names that have been linked with the Barcelona role.
