Crazy fact that links every Champions League final played in Munich

After countless failures, Paris Saint-Germain have finally reached the promised land.

The French club defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the first final of the new expanded Champions League tournament.

For PSG, 19-year-old Désiré Doué scored a brace, while Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu completed the goal-fest in Munich, a city accustomed to making history in this showpiece game. It was the biggest win the history of this fixture.

This year’s final is the fifth time that Munich has hosted the final of the European Cup or Champions League. Incredibly, every single Munich-hosted final has produced a new winner.

The 1979 final between Nottingham Forest and Malmo of Sweden was held at Munich’s Olympic Stadium. The English team won 1-0. Nottingham also became only the second British team to win the tournament after Celtic.

The 1992-1993 edition was similar to the 2024-2025 edition in that it was also debuting a new format and was also won by a French team, in this case Olimpico de Marseille, in Munich. Their opponent was AC Milan, and Basile Boli scored the only goal of the match. It was the first time a club from France, the birthplace of the Champions League, had won the championship.

Four years later, at the same venue and against another Italian opponent, Borussia Dortmund claimed their first and so far only “Big Ears” trophy. A brace from Karl-Heinz Riedle and another from Lars Ricken defeated Juventus, who could do little to stop Alessandro Del Piero’s goal.

Finally, in one of the most thrilling finals of recent years, Chelsea edged Bayern Munich on penalties at their home ground, the Allianz Arena. Thomas Müller opened the scoring in the 83rd minute, but Didier Drogba equalized five minutes in, sending the game into extra time. In extra time, goalkeeper Petr Čech saved a penalty from Arjen Robben, and in the final shootout, Drogba converted the winning kick.
