Napoli returned to the Champions League after a two-year hiatus and the Serie A side did so in style, with the Diego Armando Maradona stadium full to the brim to witness a 4-1 drubbing of Liverpool on the sort of European night that Cristiano Ronaldo enjoys.

The Portuguese, as reported by AS, was in touch with Napoli over a potential move during the summer, with Jorge Mendes working on a double deal to send Keylor Navas to Naples while also negotiating the possible transfer of the former Real Madrid player from Manchester United, with Ronaldo determined to move to a club that could offer Champions League football.

Spalletti was eager to see Ronaldo at Napoli

Now, Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti has acknowledged that he dreamed “a little” about Ronaldo playing alongside Victor Osimhen for his side and the Italian tactician also spoke directly to the Portuguese.

According to Alessandro Alciato, a journalist for Amazon Prime Video, during the final hours of the transfer market Ronaldo sent a WhatsApp message to Spalletti: “Would you train me? Do you want to do it? Are you ready?”. The Italian’s response was consistent with what he had said in public: “I’m ready. If you come, I will gladly train you”. In the end it wasn’t to be and Ronaldo remained at Old Trafford, but Spalletti was keen on the union.
