Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the main protagonists at the Globe Soccer Awards. The Al Nassr captain was present on stage alongside Rúben Dias and Kyle Walker. The 2023 top scorer took the opportunity to talk about the Champions League, his favourites for the tournament and the comparison between the Saudi Pro League and Ligue 1, among other topics.

You were the top scorer in the 2023 calendar year...

I was the top scorer this season, imagine beating young animals like Haaland... I’m proud. And I’ll be 39 soon! I like it when people doubt me again and then I’m successful. I’m not affected by criticism.

Ronaldo’s opinion on Manchester City and their success...

Manchester City did amazing. Congratulations on your season. Players, coach. Magnificent... They finally won the Champions League, they probably deserved it two years ago. I enjoy watching them play.

Who are the favourites to win the 23/24 UEFA Champions League?

“Manchester City have a good chance of winning the Champions League again. Favorites? Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern...”.

Ronaldo’s feelings on playing in Saudi Arabia

“I’m very happy at Al Nassr, it’s a big step. Saudi Arabia is in a process, it will take a long time... but step by step they will reach the highest level. I think the Saudi Pro League will be among the top three leagues in the world. The people in Arabia will be proud.

On comparing Saudi Arabian football to France’s Ligue 1

The Saudi League is not worse than Ligue 1. The Saudi Pro League is more competitive than Ligue 1, I can say that after a year there. We are already better than the French league.

When will you retire?

“The moment I feel I’m done, I’ll retire... maybe in 10 years?!”.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr play against Inter Miami after the MLS side take on El Salvador. Before playing in Hong Kong as part of their pre-season schedule, Tata Martino’s men will make a stopover in Riyadh to face the Saudi sides Al Hilal (Jan 29) and Al Nassr (Feb 1).
