Cristiano Ronaldo: The only one to beat Unai Emery away from home in Europe

Villarreal manager Unai Emery has played 12 games away from La Cerámica with Villarreal in Europe this season and has lost just one.

The defeat came against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stoppage-time goal to seal a 2-1 win for United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Champions League group stages in late September. Ronaldo’s goal was also late, coming in the 95th minute.

Emery’s impressive away record

With Emery in charge, Villarreal have lost only one of their 12 European away games in two years. In the other 11 matches, the Basque coach has recorded eight wins and three draws.

The 12 matches are a mix of Europa League, where he claimed five wins and two draws. In the Champions League, Emery has three wins, one draw and the defeat at Old Trafford.

On the road, Villarreal have beaten Qarabag (0-3), Sivasspor (0-1), RB Salzburg (0-2), Dynamo Kiev (0-2), Dinamo Zagreb (0-1), Young Boys (1-4), Atalanta (2-3) and Italian giants Juventus (0-3) in the last 16 of this year’s Champions League.

The Yellow Submarine have also drawn with Maccabi Tel Aviv (1-1), Arsenal (0-0) and Bayern Munich (1-1). They have played finals in two neutral grounds, against Manchester United, in the Europa League final in Gdansk and against Chelsea in the Super Cup in Belfast.

Villarreal beat United in the Europa League final after a dramatic penalty shootout. In Windsor Park, Chelsea won 6-5 on penalties against Emery’s side.

On Wednesday, Villarreal take on Liverpool at Anfield for their Champions League semi-final first leg clash.
