Cristiano Ronaldo’s lawyers demand more than $600,000 from Katrhyn Mayorga’s lawyer
They accuse Leslie Mark Stovall of “vexatious and bad faith conduct” against Ronaldo and the judge in the case highlighted “his disregard for the rules of the court.”
Cristiano Ronaldo and his legal team have asked the American judge Jennifer Dorsey to order Katrhyn Mayorga’s lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall, to pay the soccer superstar more than $626,000. Peter Christiansen, the Portuguese player’s lawyer, has demanded that Stovall be held personally responsible for claiming millions of dollars from his client in the failed lawsuit over the Las Vegas woman’s rape case more than a decade ago. The judge, in fact, expelled Stovall from court on June 10 for “acting in bad faith” and improperly using leaked and stolen documents to keep the case going.
Could Ronaldo receive payout?
This is the news coming out of ESPN, which includes the statements made by the judge against the lawyer.
“He crossed the border of ethical behavior before he filed this action, and his disregard for the rules of this court has continued unabated,” said the judge. In a 42-page document, Dorsey asserted that dismissing Katrhyn Mayorga’s case without the option of reintroducing it was a severe sanction, but noted that Ronaldo had been seriously harmed by Stovall’s conduct.
Christiansen and his legal team presented the demand on Friday and the amount is much higher than the $375,000 they supposedly paid at the time for Mayorga’s silence in the face of her sexual assault complaint.
“Given Stovall’s abuses and flagrant misconduct, Stovall should be made personally responsible for ensuring Ronaldo is reimbursed for having to defend against his vexatious and bad faith conduct,” expressed Cristiano’s lawyer, who has calculated his team’s fees between $350 and $850 per hour for a total of 1,200 hours of work, according to the news outlet.
Ronaldo's attorneys accuse Stovall of obtaining stolen material containing privileged attorney-client communications and then attempting to make them public by attaching them to court filings.
The case of Kathryn Mayorga
The former Las Vegas model and teacher asserted in her lawsuit that she met Cristiano at a nightclub in the city when she was 25 and he was 24. She stated that she went with him and other people to the suite of the hotel where the soccer player was staying and alleged that in the bedroom he sexually assaulted her. Ronaldo’s legal team has not denied that he met Mayorga and had sexual relations in the summer of 2009, but according to them they were consensual.
In 2018, the Las Vegas police reopened the case at the request of Katrhyn Mayorga, but the Clark County prosecutor decided not to file criminal charges in 2019, arguing that too much time had passed to prove what Mayorga said before a jury beyond a reasonable doubt.
