Cruz Azul and Jovic: a bullet dodged?
Cruz Azul came close to taking the former Real Madrid striker to Liga MX, but may now be feeling relief that they missed out on his signature.
Luka Jovic’s name echoed through Cruz Azul’s transfer rumors for weeks, but the deal never materialized. The former Real Madrid striker kept the club waiting until the very end, only to ultimately choose a move to Greece, signing with AEK Athens. What initially felt like a missed opportunity for many fans is now being seen in a different light - perhaps it was a bullet dodged.
Jovic failing to fire in Greece
Jovic turned down Cruz Azul’s offer in favor of joining AEK, but his time in Greek soccer has been far from impressive. So far, he’s scored just one goal in nine appearances across all competitions. That lone strike came in his debut, during a UEFA Conference League win over Aris Limassol.
Since then, the goals have dried up. In seven matches between the Greek Super League and Conference League, Jovic has failed to find the back of the net. While AEK has managed to stay unbeaten and secure results without his contributions, the Serbian forward - like any striker - needs to rediscover his scoring touch.
It’s been over six weeks since Jovic last scored. According to performance ratings from BeSoccer, his best outing was a modest 6.6 against Levadiakos, a match in which he left with a minor injury. On the team front, AEK - where Mexican international Orbelín Pineda also plays - is thriving. They remain undefeated in league play and currently sit second in the standings, trailing Olympiacos only on goal difference.
Sepúlveda scoring for La Máquina
Meanwhile, Ángel Sepúlveda has kept his head down and focused on delivering for Cruz Azul. Unfazed by the Jovic rumors, the veteran striker has let his play do the talking. In the Apertura 2025, Sepúlveda leads the team with five goals in ten matches, placing him among the top ten scorers in the league.
