The countdown to the 2023 Clausura tournament is on, with Cruz Azul amongst the club taking part in the Copa por Mexico (Copa Sky), which they’ll hope will help them build some momentum ahead of the league campaign underway. Rumours started swirling a few days ago that La Máquina were looking to add veteran Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez to their ranks and there have been new developments.

Could Luis Suárez join Cruz Azul in time for the 2023 Apertura kicking off?

Club president Víctor Velázquez has confirmed Cruz Azul’s interest in the ex-Barcelona forward and has revealed that the board are looking to bring Suárez in in time for the start of the 2023 Clausura, which gets underway on 6 January. “I don’t have any news for you yet but we’ve been in negotiations. Our intention is to bring Luis Suárez to Cruz Azul, we just need to be patient and look for one or two other reinforcements on top of that. As well as a striker, we’re also looking for a left-back” Velázquez said shortly before Los Celestes’ 2-1 victory over Pumas.

You may remember that the Mexico City outfit endured a terrible start to the 2022 Apertura under Diego Aguirre, with a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Club América causing the Uruguayan to lose his job. Raul Gutiérrez arrived in his place and was able to steady the ship, ultimately leading Cruz Azul to qualification for the final phase liguilla, where they were beaten by Monterrey.

Los Cementeros will be hoping for a much better start to the 2023 Clausura and will be going in search of their 10th league title, the last of which came in 2021. As mentioned, the tournament will kick off on Friday, 6 January although Cruz Azul must wait a further 48 hours to get their campaign underway when they travel to Tijuana.
