Cruz Azul woke up this morning as the leaders of the Liga MX table, after beating Tigres 1-0. Martín Anselmi’s men top the standings on 16 points - one ahead of Pachuca. The coach was very satisfied with the team’s performance - as was midfielder Carlos Rodríguez, who said afterwards, “We’re on the right path. With the desire to continue improving and we are taking it game by game. We are a very united team, there is a lot of happiness because we work for it and we look for it. But we must improve and play better games.”

Room for improvement at Cruz Azul

There is no shortage of talent in Anselmi’s team has a lot of talent but ‘Charly’ recognizes that they can still go up another level. “Obviously that happened in the first two game when we struggled to score. We lacked strength but now we are gaining points which is what we want and deserve,” he added. The Mexico international feels that there is now a different mood among the fans, “Since the season began we have had that change and energy that this team needed.”

Meanwhile, Alexis Gutiérrez spoke humbly about the Cementeros’ climb to the top of the table, “We are taking it game by game. We are very happy to be where we are,” he explained, adding, “Goals are going to start coming. We must continue working hard, and we must continue with humility.” Alexis says that he wants to continue supporting the confidence that Martín Anselmi gives him as a starter, “With a lot of responsibility, opportunities are sometimes few and far between and you have to take advantage of them when they arrive.”

Cruz Azul have won all of their last five games (Mazatlán, Tijuana, Querétaro, Atlético San Luis and Tigres). They are next in action mid-week when they visit León in matchday 9. Next weekend the team has a tough trip to fourth-placed América, who crashed to a 2-1 defeat to Pachuca on Saturday.
